How To: Pick Outfits for a family photo shoot:: Columbus, Ohio Family Photographer

So one of my most popular posts is this one about how to pick an outfit for a family photo shoot. According to google, it is the most viewed blog on my website. I decided to write another one. But this time focus on EXTENDED families.

Extended family photo sessions can already be EXTREMELY stressful. Making sure everyone is available, booking around nap schedules and meals, keeping kids happy, and any weather and location problems that may arise. Don’t let picking out the outfits be part of that stress. I am here to help you pick out the perfect outfits for your extended family photo shoot. You may be surprised, because you may not have to go out and spend a bunch of money on new outfits…unless you are like me and use photos as an excuse to go buy new outfits;-)

Color scheme. Neutrals and blues and greens seem to look good on just about everyone. It seems to be a very popular color scheme among my big families.

Blues, Khakis and pops of other neutrals like maroon and mustard bring a look together nicely. Our big suggestion: try not to make them all 1 color/matchy matchy. Mix up the prints but ab=void BIG prints that will be distracting and cause the attention to be drawn to the outfit instead of the family, and make sure each individual family looks nice together since there will be break downs of each family.

Another option, which is particularly popular around the holidays is to choose holiday colors…..

Reds and greens and buffalo plaids all go well together for a reason! They are FESTIVE!! Oh but then there are the REALLY creative and fun families…ones that want their personalities to shine through the outfits!

This family were HUGE UK fans, and traveled A LOT together. They wanted to represent that in their photos:-)

MY personal favorite way to come up with I LOVE taking 1 particular print and basing all outfits off of that. On the beach photos….the first photo of the 3 lovely girls….lol…the print we took the colors from was my best friend, Jess’ top to her outfit:-) So if you look at the large family photo, you will see emerald, coral, blues and other greens…and we even popped in another print on my daughter because it was a complimentary print to her shirt, and they would not be photographed just the 2 of them together….so it works…don’t be completely afraid of mixing and matching prints. However, if you have ANY questions on your outfits…Ask your photographer, they will HELP you. (Thank you Mama Hens Moments) for the beach photos!

The 3rd photo we took the colors from the floral dresses and incorporated the blues, pinks and creams. with burgundy.

Hope to see you soon, but even if you don’t hire us for your family photos, I HOPE this blog helps you plan your next set of family outfits!!
